The 3D Dental Imaging Process – Atlanta, Georgia
New dental technology and new treatment processes can seem intimidating at first, but you can rest assured that 3D digital imaging is safe, effective, and is of no worry at all. When patients at our Atlanta, Georgia practice have a 3D digital image taken for the first time, they’re often surprised how simple and easy the procedure is. Let’s take you briefly through this process so that you understand what happens and why you have nothing to worry about.
How a 3D Digital Scan is Taken
The entire dental imaging process is easy and takes less than 30 seconds. The first step is to place a light leaded apron across the chest and abdomen to guard against radiation exposure. While the radiation exposure from 3D digital imaging is lower than traditional radiography, we take all precautions possible to ensure you are as safe as possible when you are our guests.
Patients are then asked to gently position their head in the central area of the digital scanner. The patient will notice the two arms of the digital imaging machine rotate around them for a few seconds. As they circle around, they will gather the essential visual data. That’s all there is to it. No special preparation and no extra hassle.
Viewing the 3D Imaging Results from All Angles
Once all the data is fed into a computer, a full 3D model of a patient’s mouth is created. Your teeth and soft tissues will be viewable within no time at all. Dr. Dunson can rotate the image as needed to examine problem areas and define the best possible solution for the patient. We can also look at cross sections of the various structures of your mouth for even greater accuracy and efficiency. It’s this ease of process and ease of analysis that has made 3D digital imaging an integral part of our treatment process at our Atlanta, Georgia cosmetic and implant dentistry center.
Applying the 3D Image to Your Dental Care Needs
While 3D digital imaging is useful for general diagnostic needs, it’s especially important to use it for a wide variety of dental therapies. For example, 3D digital imaging makes it easier and safer to place dental implants (implant dentistry). We can pre-plan the entire treatment and determine not just the optimal angle and placement of the dental implant in the tooth gap, but also if there are any delicate structures there that should be avoided. We can use the 3D digital model for other dental health and treatment applications as well, including detecting oral cancers, TMJ disorder treatment, root canal therapy, and various oral surgery needs.
